The Wilderness of Wonders
Jeddah · Tabuk · Wadi Disah · AlUla
A desert wilderness shaped by the hand of nature. From Jeddah on the Red Sea, through Tabuk and the Hisma desert, three full days inside the red canyons of Wadi Disah, and on to the rock formations of AlUla. Coast, desert, canyon and oasis unfold one after another, planned around the rhythm of sunrise and sunset.
Day by Day
Jeddah · gathering day
On the day your Socotra journey ends we meet in Jeddah, on the Red Sea. In the evening we head for the waterfront to watch the sun go down by the floating mosque and the King Fahd Fountain.

Old Jeddah, then Tabuk
Morning in Al-Balad, the old town, and the central fish market—most of it built between the 16th and early 20th centuries, now on the World Heritage list. In the afternoon we fly north-west to Tabuk, and at dusk drive into the Hisma desert, where wind-carved pillars, arches and domes stand on flat plain.

Desert sunrise, on to Wadi Disah
Sunrise in the desert south of Tabuk, dunes layered against the mountains. After breakfast we drive to Wadi Disah, one of the finest places in Saudi Arabia: a canyon that behaves like a sculpture hall, carved by wind and washed by rain. Sunset from inside the gorge.

A full day in Wadi Disah
A full day inside the canyon. Red sandstone carved into layered ridges, and fewer people the deeper you go. The middle of the day is for scouting and rest; sunrise, sunset and the night sky each get their own time.

Deeper into Wadi Disah
A third full day inside the canyon—a sculpture hall made by wind and rain. Push deeper into the badlands where the crowds thin out, and the red sandstone looks polished in low light. The middle of the day for rest and scouting; sunrise, sunset and the Milky Way each get their own window.

Sunrise, then on to AlUla
One more sunrise in Wadi Disah, then the drive to AlUla. This oasis town sits among rocks shaped by wind and water—Elephant Rock the best known of them. Sunset between the palm groves and the outcrops.

Hegra, Maraya and the rock country
The last day moves through the country around AlUla: Hegra in the morning, Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage site, where Nabataean tombs are cut into the desert outcrops; then Maraya, a concert hall clad in four thousand mirrors that all but disappears into the desert. The rest of the day for Rainbow Rock, the Twin Bridges and Dancing Rock with its spiral strata—shooting from sunrise to sunset, and the Milky Way after dark.

Departure
Transfer to the airport in good time. The journey home is a journey of its own—and other journeys, South America among them, can follow straight on.
